Place a coffee filter into a funnel. Pour the coffee instead of coal in the filter. (Available in the aquarium / pet)
Pour water into the funnel, as evidenced by the activated carbon filter, easy to collect water from the chimney.
Try a few drops of food coloring to water and filtered through charcoal and see what happens ....
It depends on what you want to use, and quantity of water filtered. Clean gravel and sand filter can the water well, it is because it filters through the water table.
You can not build something like a Brita filter commercial with common materials. Synthesized Using a technique of ion exchange molecules.
A carbon filter should be fairly simple. I think they also sell materials, activated carbon filters and other pool supply stores and places that matter to people with their own wells. (And I think one of the places of aquarium supplies, too.) Connect tube and exit holes in the top of a clean tank drilled (glass or plastic) and fill in the filter material. Add some kind of screen, just to save the material to filter.
Because it is a scientific project, you can try out different filters: sand, vermiculite, sand, coal, and some others. You can even choose to consult your local station for municipal water production to see if someone might be interested in a few pieces of advice.
